In conjunction with the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), Local First Lexington – an alliance of locally owned, independent retail and service businesses –announces Independents Week Celebration July 1-7. Many Local First Lexington member businesses will feature special promotions and events throughout the week, including a “Find Waldo” scavenger hunt starting July 1 (clues available at Morris Book Shop); a Drink Local celebration at West Sixth Brewery on July 3; and a DIY fashion show at the Lexington Rescue Mission Thrift Store & The Bazaar, where participants take 45 minutes to shop for an outfit in the thrift store followed by an hour to prepare for a runway fashion show to be judged by stylist Pamula Honchell of Fashionable Measures. Local First Lexington was formed in 2008 with the goal to help keep Lexington a unique, vibrant and economically stable community. Their website features a directory of more than 100 member businesses, all of which are locally owned. Studies have shown that locally-owned independent businesses keep a significantly larger percentage of revenue in the community than chain businesses do.
