The Lexington Department of Parks & Recreation in a partnership with Cricket Wireless have constructed the city’s second skatepark.
Located in Kirklevington Park, the new skatepark was realized after over a year’s worth of planning with the parks department and the skateboarding community. Cricket Wireless donated $15,000 toward the project, with the parks department supplying another $21,000, according to Rudy Cruse, a recreation manager with the parks department.
Cruse said the new park, installed in the south side of the city to give young people more skateboarding opportunities in that area, is “completely different” from the Woodland Park Skate Park, in that the facility was designed to emulate an actual streetscape where skaters will encounter benches, curbs, tables and other objects instead of ramps and poles typically associated with skate parks.
